How to recognise a good betting odd
An odd encodes an implied probability plus the bookmaker's margin. Decimal odd 2.00 implies 50 %; if both outcomes of an even match are priced at 1.90, the book's margin is roughly 5 %.
- Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odd
- Sum the implied probabilities of all outcomes: the excess over 100 % is the margin
- Comparing the same market across bookmakers reveals the fairest price
Match odds 1.90 / 1.90 → implied 52.6 % + 52.6 % = 105.2 %. The 5.2 % excess is the bookmaker's long-run margin on this market, regardless of the result.
How not to lose at online betting (responsible play)
Every bookmaker's odds include a margin; over time, results trend toward it. Betting is entertainment with a price, not an income strategy. Treat stakes as spending, never as investment.
- Set a deposit limit before the first bet and check how to lower it quickly
- Never chase losses with larger stakes
- Use the self-exclusion register if play stops being a free choice — see responsible gambling resources
