How to recognise a good betting odd

An odd encodes an implied probability plus the bookmaker's margin. Decimal odd 2.00 implies 50 %; if both outcomes of an even match are priced at 1.90, the book's margin is roughly 5 %.

  • Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odd
  • Sum the implied probabilities of all outcomes: the excess over 100 % is the margin
  • Comparing the same market across licensed books reveals the fairest price
Worked example

Match odds 1.90 / 1.90 → implied 52.6 % + 52.6 % = 105.2 %. The 5.2 % excess is the bookmaker's long-run margin on this market, regardless of the result.

How not to lose at online betting (responsible play)

There is no system that beats the margin

Every licensed bookmaker's odds include a margin; over time, results trend toward it. Betting is entertainment with a price, not an income strategy. Treat stakes as spending, never as investment.
